Facing problems while transferring MXF movies from Canon XF205 camcorder to Final Cut Pro? This post explains how to transcode Canonn XF205 MXF to FCP for editing.
“Hi, I wanna know is there anyone here can help me out? I need to edit MXF videos into FCP X. However, the issue was that the videos in FCP timeline turned to be blurry that could not be edited. By the way, the videos were recorded by Canon XF205. Thanks for any tip!”
As to my own experience, MXF files are not supported by many editing software on Mac including FCP X, iMovie, FCE .etc. If you wanna open Canon XF205 MXF videos in FCP 7/X without any issue, you’d better encode MXF to FCP friendly codec like Apple ProRes.
For this case, a fast, independent software application for converting MXF to Apple ProRes is needed here. What I used is MXF Converter for Mac. With it, you can easily make Canon XF205 movies editable in FCP with optimized Apple ProRes codec. Besides FCP, this professional App offers several ideal codecs for NLEs including AIC for iMovie, MPEG-2 for Premiere, DNxHD for Avid and so on. Now, download the software on computer and follow the guide below to start conversion.
How to Transfer Canon XF205 MXF to FCP 7/X?
Step 1: Add footage to MXF Video Converter.
Launch the program and click “Add ” button to import the Canon XF205 MXF files to the top MXF to ProRes Converter Mac.
Step 2: Select output format
Go to “Format” bar and choose “Final Cut Pro> Apple PreRes 422” or “Apple ProRes 422 HQ” or “Apple ProRes 4444” as the output format.
Tips: If you want to set some parameters for the output profile, you could click the “Settings” button to set the output bitrate, encode, frame rate, resolution, sample rate, channels, etc.
1) You can follow the Five Types of Apple ProRes Codecs to choose the best codec.
2) FCP 5/6 only support ProRes 422 and ProRes 422(HQ).
3) If need, you can click “Settings” to freely change the video and audio settings. To keep the best quality for editing, you’d better keep your original settings. For example, if your resource file is 1080 29.97p or 59.94i, you’d better select the video size as 1920*1080 and frame rate as 29.97fps.
Step 3: Start conversion
Click Convert button to start transcoding Canon XF205 MXF to ProRes .mov for Final Cut Pro on Mac OS X.
Once the conversion completes, you can click “Open” to find the .MOV videos which can be directly imported to FCP. As you see, now you can import and edit Canon XF205 MXF clips in Final Cut Pro 6/7/X without problems.
